Cubbit is a new way to store data that has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the data storage industry. The company is based on bee’s and the power of the swarm. Each Cubbit acts as part of the hive with the user storing their own information on half of the device while the other half acts as part of a cloud where other people’s encrypted data will be stored. This decentralizes cloud storage and saves an enormous amount of energy from data center cooling, the use of low-consumption arm processors, and geographically located data.
Currently, data in the cloud is stored by large server facilities throughout the world that use insurmountable amounts of electricity. The electricity is mainly derived from fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. A report from Greenpeace showed that nearly 2% of all global emissions come from IT-related services like data storage, and continues to rise. Cubbit says that for each 10TB saved on their devices, 1 ton of CO2 is saved annually.
