This year’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago will be taking place Nov. 14-16 in Chicago at the McCormick Place Convention Center.
According to their website, Greenbuild is “the only event genuinely dedicated to sustainability in the built environment, from the sessions we present to the products on the show floor to the way the event is produced. By participating with Greenbuild, you can return to the field armed with the education and discoveries that will empower your decisions, influence your actions, and inspire your dialogue—prompting you to share sustainability with others.”
The theme this year is Humans by Nature: The Intersection of Humanity & the Built Environment. It will cover a wide array of topics that define how we interact with our planet. One of these topics is “enhancing building efficiency and performance”, an ongoing mission of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Greenbuild.
Each year, there are more than 20,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors from across the green building sector at the conference. Some of these attendees include commercial and residential professionals, building owners and operators, students, architects, advocates, and educators. There will be more than 750 suppliers and top manufacturers of the latest green building equipment, products, services and technology available.
Here are some of the highlights:
Amal Clooney, an internationally recognized human rights lawyer, will give the opening keynote.“Green building is about providing equal access to safe, healthy, and sustainable environments for everyone. It’s about understanding that every life matters, and furthermore, that quality of life must be preserved,” said USGBC senior vice president of conferences and events Kate Hurst in a press release. “Amal has a deep understanding of this. She has spent her life fighting for the underserved and underrepresented and her tireless and extraordinary efforts on behalf of others underscore the greater humanitarian mission of our movement.”
Pioneer Millworks will Showcase LEED Eligible, Ethically Sourced, and USA Crafted Reclaimed and Sustainable Wood.
Carmen Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will give the closing speech at Greenbuild. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, Puerto Rico has been faced with unsafe drinking water, power outages, and lack of suitable shelter. Cruz has become an voice for Puerto Rican citizens, lobbying Congress for aid to restore the power grid and enhance infrastructure.
Jessica Grounds will be speaking at the Women in Green Power Lunch. Grounds has founded and led multiple organizations to encourage women in leadership, including Mine the Gap, which equips industries, leaders and organizations with strategy and tools to create and sustain gender-inclusive work environment and Running Start, an organization that trains and inspires young women to run for elected office. Jessica served as the Director of Women Ready for Hillary, the grassroots organization that built early support for Hillary Clinton’s campaign for president during the 2016 election.
